A Study

A study was made in Sweden spanning more than 30 years, interviewing people in the age groups of 70. The study was conducted in the early and mid '70s, early '90s and 2000s. It revealed that sexual activity rates had climbed the ladder among both men and women. This also included unmarried people. In the survey content in 2000 – 2001, 68% of married old men confessed to indulge in sexual activity. This indicated a 16% rise from the last decade. The percentage of married old women on the other hand rose to 56%, showing 18% increase from previous decade.

Then again, while the "old age and sex" scenario in the United States showed a decline with increasing age, there were still three quarters of those surveyed who were reported to be engaging in sexual pleasures. These include people in the age group of 57 to 64 years. The percentage of octogenarians taking part in sexual activities was 20% in United States.

The report derived in the United States was very much comparable to the Australian old age sex proportion. The study was conducted from the mid 1990s and it revealed that within the age of 80, 29% men and 8% women still took part in sex. The recent most study was that conducted by the Kinsey Institute in the United States in 2010. It showed that 20% of old people with the age groups of 80 to 94 were still actively involved in sex.

Market for sex enhancing products

One may not always have to directly interview the elderly citizens to find out about their bedroom secrets and conduct a survey based on that. Popular Viagra selling drug companies have already revealed the sexual activity rates amongst the elderly population. Pfizer Drug Company already has a fair idea on the demand of Viagra amongst older men and most of these men are in the age group of '50s. A clinical trial was conducted on 3000 old men taking Viagra and 60 to 80 percent of them showed improvements. The huge market for Viagra products has also triggered a surge of new products for erectile dysfunction. Some such popular products targeting the older populatioinclude Levitra and Cialis.

Online dating and sex workers

Dating is yet another way to determine the rate of sexual activity among the older generation. Harris Survey has revealed that 16 percent of traffic via the online personal sites is accounted for by people aged 55 and above. The clients of sex workers are often people within the age group of 50 to 60. On the other hand, research has revealed the people in the 55+ age group form the third largest online porn consumers.

Thus, the picture is clear. Young or old, everybody needs and desires sex. There's absolutely nothing wrong if people seek to be a part of these very normal and simple pleasures of life even in the later years of their lives.
